The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has issued a warning to the governors of Bauchi, Katsina, Kano, and Kebbi states over the decision to close schools for five weeks during Ramadan.
The student body has given a 72-hour ultimatum for the policy to be reversed, threatening nationwide protests if their demand is not met.
In a statement released on Monday, NANS described the school closure as a violation of students’ right to continuous education.
The group argued that halting academic activities for such a long period could negatively impact learning and unfairly affect students who do not observe Ramadan.
NANS raised concerns that the policy could set a precedent that prioritizes religious observances over education.
The association called on the government to reconsider, stating that education should not be disrupted for such an extended period.
The student body urged parents, educators, and civil society groups to join them in advocating for students’ rights.
They warned that if the state governments failed to reopen schools, NANS would take legal action and organize protests across the country.
Meanwhile, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has also criticized the decision, calling it discriminatory and a violation of non-Muslim students’ rights.
CAN warned that the move could worsen the education crisis in northern Nigeria, where a high percentage of children are already out of school. The group has threatened legal action against the governors if the policy remains in place.
