BREAKING: Nigerian Doctors Declare 5-Day Nationwide Warning Strike

The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has announced a five-day nationwide warning strike, set to commence on Friday, September 12, 2025, in protest against poor working conditions and other unresolved demands.

The announcement was contained in a statement on Thursday by the General Secretary of the Association of Resident Doctors, Federal Capital Territory Administration (ARD-FCTA), Dr. Agbor Affiong.

According to Affiong, the decision followed an emergency online meeting of NARD’s National Executive Council (NEC) held late Wednesday, September 10, and extended into the early hours of Thursday, September 11.

“Arising from the NARD E-NEC meeting held on Wednesday, the 10th of September, 2025, which extended into the early hours of Thursday, the 11th of September, 2025, the NEC members unanimously resolved to embark on a five-day warning strike.

“The strike will commence at 8:00 a.m. on Friday, 12th September 2025, and will end on Tuesday, 16th September 2025. All centres are hereby directed to duly inform their hospital managements and continue to press home our collective demands,” the statement read.

Earlier in the week, NARD President, Dr. Osundara Zenith, had revealed that members were prepared to shut down public hospitals nationwide to demand action on issues such as poor remuneration, downgrading of certificates, inadequate manpower, lack of equipment, and worsening working conditions.

It was also recalled that resident doctors under the FCT chapter had already embarked on a seven-day warning strike which began on Monday, highlighting the growing frustration within the medical sector.

The planned nationwide action is expected to disrupt healthcare delivery in federal and state hospitals across the country if urgent steps are not taken by the government to avert the industrial action.
