President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially announced the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in London on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at approximately 4:30 p.m. following a prolonged illness.
In a statement released by the Presidency and signed by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu expressed profound grief over Buhari’s demise and extended heartfelt condolences to his widow, Aisha Buhari, during a phone call.
As part of immediate national protocols, President Tinubu has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to travel to the United Kingdom to accompany the late President’s body back to Nigeria.
To honour the former leader, President Tinubu has also ordered that the Nigerian flag be flown at half-mast nationwide.
The late Muhammadu Buhari served as Nigeria’s President from 2015 to 2023 and had earlier held power as the country’s military Head of State between January 1984 and August 1985.
The nation awaits further announcements on burial arrangements and official state honours to be accorded to the late elder statesman.
