The leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, on Friday, again failed to open his defence in his ongoing terrorism trial before the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja.
The case, which came up for continuation before Justice Binta Nyako, was expected to mark the beginning of Kanu’s defence after the prosecution closed its case. However, the IPOB leader could not proceed with his defence for the second consecutive time due to yet-to-be-clarified procedural issues.
Kanu, who has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since his rearrest and extradition to Nigeria in 2021, faces multiple charges bordering on terrorism, treasonable felony, and incitement.
Following the development, the trial judge adjourned the case until Monday, October 28, for further hearing.
Kanu’s legal team has consistently argued that his prolonged detention violates his fundamental rights, while the prosecution maintains that his actions threaten national security.
The courtroom session witnessed tight security, with journalists and supporters restricted from certain areas of the court premises.
More details are expected as proceedings resume next week.
