Vandals on Friday attacked and damaged underground electricity cables in Abuja, disrupting power supply to several areas of the city.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) confirmed the incident occurred along the 132kV transmission line near Menillum Park, Punch reports
The damaged cables supply electricity to the Central Area transmission substation in Katampe.
As a result of the vandalism, power supply to key areas, including Maitama, Wuse, Garki, Jabi, Lifecamp, Asokoro, Utako, Mabushi, and parts of the Presidential Villa, has been significantly affected.
Over 60% of power supply in the capital has been disrupted, impacting eight major distribution feeders.
TCN reported that approximately 40 meters of conductor material were stolen during the attack.
A team of engineers has been deployed to the site to repair the damaged cables and restore electricity to the affected areas.
The company urged residents to remain patient as efforts are underway to resolve the issue and called on communities to remain vigilant in protecting critical power infrastructure.
In a similar development, the government disclosed that it spent ₦8.8 billion last year to repair vandalized electricity infrastructure, including 128 damaged towers across the country.
Authorities continue to investigate the incident, and TCN has called for increased security to prevent future occurrences.
