Nigeria’s Super Eagles have moved up one spot in the latest FIFA world rankings, rising from 44th to 43rd. However, despite this slight improvement, they have slipped to sixth place in Africa.
The ranking marks a small recovery for the national team, which had earlier hit its lowest position in six years at the end of 2024. In January of that year, Nigeria was ranked 28th globally but gradually declined to 44th.
The Super Eagles’ recent performances in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers contributed to their ranking boost. They secured a 2-0 win against Rwanda in Kigali and played to a 1-1 draw with Zimbabwe in Uyo. However, with seven points from six matches, Nigeria remains fourth in their qualification group.
Morocco continues to lead African teams, moving up to 12th in the world. Senegal follows in 19th, with Egypt (32nd), Algeria (36th), and Côte d’Ivoire (41st) all ranked ahead of Nigeria.
On the global stage, Argentina retained the top spot, while Spain climbed above France to claim second place. England, Brazil, Netherlands, Portugal, Belgium, Italy, and Germany complete the top ten.
Elsewhere, Myanmar recorded the biggest jump, moving up seven places to 162nd. Guinea-Bissau had the biggest drop, falling to 128th. Bosnia and Herzegovina gained the most points, while Iraq experienced the steepest decline.
The Super Eagles will look to further improve their rankings with upcoming friendlies, including a match against Russia on June 6. Before that, they will participate in the 2025 Unity Cup in London from May 27 to 31. The next FIFA rankings update is scheduled for July 10.
