Polytechnic Lecturers Begin Strike December 2

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has announced a two-week warning strike commencing on December 2, 2024, citing the Federal Government’s failure to address its unresolved demands.

ASUP President, Kpanja Shamnah, revealed this decision during a press briefing in Abuja following the union’s 112th National Executive Council (NEC) meeting. He expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s response to the union’s earlier 15-day ultimatum, which called for action on pressing issues affecting polytechnic education nationwide.

Shamnah condemned alleged violations of the Federal Polytechnics Act, including irregularities in appointing rectors at institutions like Federal Polytechnic Nekede and Federal Polytechnic Wannune. He also criticized the government’s failure to review critical policy documents, release intervention funds for 2023, and address governance challenges in the sector.

The union resolved to embark on the warning strike as a signal to the government to act promptly, warning that failure to resolve the issues could lead to an indefinite industrial action.

“This two-week action is a warning to the government to address these concerns or bear the consequences of prolonged disruption,” Shamnah stated.
