The Kwara State Police Command has detained three officers allegedly involved in the death of Suleiman Olayinka, a student of Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete.
Olayinka reportedly died following an altercation with the officers near Tanke Bridge in Ilorin, the state capital.
In a statement released on Friday, the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Ejire Adeyemi Toun, confirmed the arrest of the officers linked to the incident.
According to eyewitness reports cited by Daily Post, the incident took place around 2 p.m. on Tuesday. Olayinka had just gotten off a motorcycle when he was approached by the officers, who allegedly pinned him to the ground.
A witness recounted that Olayinka had gone to retrieve N1,000 from a Point of Sale (POS) operator to pay for his motorcycle fare when the officers intercepted him.
“They came out of a tricycle and immediately forced him to the ground. Olayinka kept asking what he had done wrong, but they didn’t give him a chance to explain,” the witness said.
The source further noted that Olayinka, who suffered from asthma, pleaded with the officers about his health condition, but his pleas were reportedly ignored.
Addressing the incident, DSP Toun stated, “The Kwara State Police Command is aware of the unfortunate incident resulting in the death of 27-year-old Suleiman Olayinka. A case of cheating and breach of trust had been lodged against him, prompting detectives to carry out an investigation.”
The police spokesperson added that the officers involved have been detained, and a full investigation into the circumstances of Olayinka’s death is ongoing. “Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses,” the statement read.
