The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a 55-year-old National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) boss, Shamsideen Oladiti, popularly known as Shameleon, over allegations of assault and murder.
According to the Command, Oladiti is currently being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti-Yaba, where detectives are investigating two separate cases linked to him.
Police sources disclosed that on September 17, 2025, at about 3:00 p.m., the suspect allegedly attacked a dispatch rider on Lagos Island, repeatedly striking him with a helmet and fists. The victim was rushed to the hospital and is said to be on life support.
Further investigations revealed that the suspect had earlier been reported for a violent altercation on August 28, 2025, in which he allegedly used a metallic ring to assault another man, inflicting severe head and facial injuries.
Despite receiving treatment, the victim died on September 17, and his body has been deposited in the morgue for autopsy.
The news of the man’s death sparked outrage on Lagos Island, with sympathisers of the deceased storming Shameleon’s office at Sandgrouse Market. The protest turned violent as two of the suspect’s motorcycles were set ablaze before police intervened to restore order.
Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, personally led mobile policemen, tactical squads, and conventional officers to the scene. He assured residents that justice would be served, stressing that Oladiti remains in custody and will face prosecution once investigations are concluded.
Meanwhile, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, clarified that contrary to some reports, the dispatch rider beaten by the suspect on Wednesday is still alive.
She said: “We have confirmed from the family that he is still alive. He is currently on oxygen. The one who died passed on September 17 as a result of injuries sustained from the assault of August 28.”
The Lagos Police Command urged residents to remain calm and law-abiding, assuring that the law will take its course.
