Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, on Thursday, met the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, at the Federal High Court, Abuja.
Sowore, who disclosed the encounter via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, described Kanu as “powerful and unrelenting,” adding that their bond remains strong despite Kanu’s continued detention.
In the post, Sowore wrote, “Finally, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and I met at the Federal High Court today. The man is powerful and unrelenting. We greeted and hugged and the bond is strong! #FreeNnamdiKanuNow.”
The activist’s visit comes amid renewed public calls for Kanu’s release and ongoing protests in parts of the country under the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow campaign, led by Sowore and other rights groups.
Kanu, who has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since his rearrest in 2021, is facing multiple charges bordering on treasonable felony.
The Federal Government has repeatedly maintained that Kanu’s trial will continue in accordance with the law, while his supporters insist that his prolonged detention violates his fundamental rights.
The meeting between Sowore and Kanu is viewed by observers as a symbolic moment in the growing civil movement calling for the IPOB leader’s freedom.
