The Oyo State government has intensified security measures in preparation for the coronation of the 46th Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, set to take place on Saturday, April 5, 2025. Security operatives have been deployed to key locations across the historic city and its surrounding communities to ensure a smooth and safe event.
Oba Owoade was officially presented with his staff and instrument of office on January 13, 2025, at the Governor’s Office in Ibadan. He ascends the throne following the passing of the late Oba Lamidi Adeyemi. The new monarch recently completed the mandatory 21-day Oro Ipebi traditional rites on March 29.
The coronation ceremony will be held at Oliveth Baptist High School, Oyo, with Governor Seyi Makinde expected to lead a delegation of esteemed guests, including prominent Nigerians. Other designated venues for the celebration include Ladigbolu Grammar School, Durbar Stadium, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi Mini Stadium, and the Alaafin’s palace.
Among the distinguished attendees are former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, ambassadors from four countries, over 200 Oyo indigenes residing in Canada, traditional rulers, diplomats, and senior government officials.
Security has been heightened in anticipation of the event, with police patrol vehicles and other security personnel stationed at strategic points, including Owoade, Jabata, Akesan, Isale Oyo, Eleekara, and the School of Survey.
A senior police official confirmed on Thursday that additional security forces have been deployed to prevent any disruptions during the ceremony.
“The police, in collaboration with other security agencies, are fully prepared to ensure a peaceful and successful coronation,” the source stated.
Meanwhile, hotels in the city are fully booked as visitors arrive for the historic occasion. A hotel manager, speaking anonymously, noted that facilities have been upgraded to accommodate guests, with assurances from security agencies regarding the safety of hospitality establishments.
Additionally, reports indicate that the popular Akesan market and other nearby marketplaces will be temporarily closed on coronation day to enable traders to participate in the festivities.
