Tragedy struck at Soun High School in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, as a dedicated teacher, Mr. Fatai Adegoke, was reportedly beaten to death by his own students after he tried to stop them from gambling during school hours.

According to reports, the incident occurred when Mr. Adegoke confronted a group of students he caught gambling within the school premises. The students allegedly became violent and descended on the teacher, inflicting severe injuries, including broken limbs.

He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment but later succumbed to the injuries sustained in the assault.

The shocking development has sparked widespread outrage among educators, parents, and civil society groups, who described the act as barbaric and a reflection of moral decay within the society.

“With deep pain and righteous indignation, we mourn the tragic and avoidable death of Mr. Fatai Adegoke, a dedicated teacher who was brutally attacked by his own students while trying to stop them from gambling during school hours,” a group of concerned educators said in a joint statement.
“This horrifying act is not just an assault on one man — it is an attack on the entire teaching profession,” the statement added.

The group called on the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), and law enforcement agencies to ensure that those responsible are arrested and prosecuted without delay. They also urged parents to take greater responsibility for their children’s moral upbringing.

Education stakeholders have since described the incident as another sad reminder of the growing indiscipline and moral erosion in schools, urging the government to restore safety and order within educational institutions.
