Tragedy struck in Akunmi Quarters, Akungba, Ondo State, on Saturday, September 20, 2025, when a young boy was reportedly beaten to death after being accused of stealing cocoa pods from a farm.

According to the Ondo State Police Command, the victim was severely assaulted before being brought to the station in an unconscious state around 2:30 p.m. Police officers immediately directed that he be taken for medical attention, but he was confirmed dead at the hospital at about 5:36 p.m.

The complainant, identified as the owner of the cocoa farm, has since been arrested, while the deceased’s remains have been deposited at the hospital morgue for autopsy.

Condemning the act, Commissioner of Police, CP Adebowale Lawal, described the incident as tragic and reiterated the Command’s zero tolerance for jungle justice.

“The public must desist from taking the law into their own hands. Any infraction or criminal act should be reported to the Police so that due process of the law can prevail,” he cautioned.

While commiserating with the victim’s family, the Police assured that the case would be handled with fairness and professionalism. CP Lawal also acknowledged the support of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, noting that the Command remains committed to protecting lives and property across Ondo State.
