Tension has gripped residents of Faruruwa community in Shanono Local Government Area of Kano State following a late-night attack by armed bandits who abducted five women — including four nursing mothers.
According to local sources, the heavily armed assailants stormed Yan Kwada village around 11:00 p.m. on Sunday, shooting sporadically into the air to scare residents and forcefully breaking into homes before whisking away the victims to an unknown destination.
A resident who spoke under anonymity said, “They came shooting and breaking doors. Before we knew it, they had taken five women away, four of whom are nursing mothers.”
Reports, however, indicate that two of the abducted women later regained their freedom, while three others remain in captivity as of the time of filing this report.
The attack has heightened fear across rural settlements in Kano State, especially in areas bordering Katsina State, where several local governments recently signed controversial peace pacts with bandit groups — a move some security experts say is pushing criminals into neighboring states.
Security analysts and community leaders have since called on the Kano State Government to strengthen security collaboration with Katsina authorities to prevent the spillover of bandit activities.
“Kano must reinforce its frontline security or risk destabilization from Katsina’s peace arrangements,” a concerned source warned.
The assault occurred barely a week after a joint military operation reportedly killed 19 bandits in the area. Despite these security operations, residents of Faruruwa and nearby villages continue to live in fear, with many abandoning their homes and seeking refuge in safer towns.
As of press time, security agencies and the Kano State Government have not issued an official statement regarding the attack.
