John Azuta-Mbata, recently elected as the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has been given a seven-day ultimatum to vacate his position, stirring controversy within the Igbo socio-political landscape.
The Rivers State Restoration Movement (RRM) issued the ultimatum on Tuesday, 13 January, according to Afripost. This development comes shortly after Azuta-Mbata, a former senator representing Ikwerre, assumed leadership of the influential organisation.
In a statement signed by the RRM’s Director-General, Johnson Georgewill, and Secretary, Sarina Akpata, the group described Azuta-Mbata’s election as both “troubling” and “embarrassing.” They further announced plans to organise mass protests across Rivers State, Abuja, and even at the United Nations to challenge his leadership.
The group alleged that Rivers State Governor Siminialayi Fubara orchestrated the election process to marginalise the people of Rivers State further. They accused the governor of betraying the political unity fostered by former Governor Nyesom Wike, who had championed Fubara’s rise as a representative of the riverine communities.
Expressing their displeasure, the RRM questioned the rationale behind what they described as the humiliation inflicted upon Rivers people under Fubara’s administration. They argued that Azuta-Mbata’s emergence as leader undermines the principles of fairness, justice, and equity.
