My Criticism Aimed at Tinubu’s Policies, Not the President– Ndume

Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South, has clarified that his disagreements with President Bola Tinubu are focused on government policies, not on the president personally.

According Vanguard, In an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Ndume spoke about his long-standing relationship with President Tinubu, referring to him as one of his mentors. While he acknowledges occasional policy differences, he emphasized that his goal is to engage in constructive criticism for the benefit of the nation.

“I am not opposed to the government. It is our government, and President Tinubu is one of my mentors,” Ndume stated. He also addressed a viral video showing him and Tinubu in a friendly exchange, explaining that it occurred during a casual discussion about visiting the president’s residence. Ndume added that Tinubu attended his daughter’s wedding, despite it coinciding with the Nigerian Army Remembrance Day, underscoring the closeness of their relationship.

Regarding his criticisms, Ndume clarified, “I don’t criticize my elders. Tinubu is my senior, and I respect him, even if I disagree with some of his policies. My critiques are about policies, not the person. I did the same with President Buhari’s policies, though I have a closer relationship with Tinubu.”

In November, Ndume had voiced his opposition to Tinubu’s proposed tax reforms, describing them as “dead on arrival.” He argued that rather than increasing the tax burden, the government should focus on easing it for Nigerians, particularly opposing the VAT bill.

“The public is strongly against the VAT bill, and it should be reconsidered. I urge President Tinubu to heed the advice from the National Economic Council and the Northern Governors’ Forum,” Ndume said.

Furthermore, Ndume urged the president to focus on efficiently implementing the federal budget, particularly in key areas like security and citizens’ welfare. “If the budget is properly executed, it will bring significant benefits to Nigerians. Security and the welfare of citizens should be top priorities,” Ndume concluded.
