Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has vehemently rejected allegations of corruption made against the leader of the Kwankwasiyya political movement, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, by Abdullahi Baffa Bichi, the former Secretary to the State Government (SSG).
During a meeting with 484 councillors from the state’s 44 local government areas on Sunday, Governor Yusuf dismissed the claims as baseless and malicious.
The allegations, which surfaced in a viral video, accused the current administration of misappropriating more funds in just two years than the previous administration of Abdullahi Ganduje did over an eight-year period. The video also claimed that Senator Kwankwaso was allegedly receiving N2 billion monthly from the state’s treasury.
Governor Yusuf firmly rejected these accusations, labeling them as lies aimed at undermining both Kwankwaso’s reputation and the credibility of his own administration.
“One of our former officials, who was recently removed from office, is now spreading these false claims. If he was genuinely concerned, why didn’t he speak out while he was still in office?” the governor asked.
He further criticized Bichi’s statements as irresponsible and damaging, stressing that such actions could diminish the respect for public figures and institutions, particularly among the youth.
“Our society faces a serious challenge when elders and respected leaders are insulted without any consequences. We will no longer tolerate this kind of behavior. Steps are being taken to address it,” Governor Yusuf stated.
The governor also defended Senator Kwankwaso’s legacy, emphasizing his significant contributions to national development during his time as governor and minister.
“Senator Kwankwaso has served in various high-level positions in this country and understands the responsibilities of leadership. It is disheartening that someone with limited achievements would attempt to tarnish his reputation,” Yusuf remarked.
Governor Yusuf also issued a stern warning to media organizations, particularly radio stations, urging them to refrain from airing unverified and inflammatory content.
“Media outlets that give platforms to such reckless statements should be aware that we are closely monitoring the situation. If this continues, we will take necessary action,” he warned.
The governor reaffirmed his unwavering support for Kwankwaso, declaring, “Wherever Senator Kwankwaso goes, we stand with him. We are proud of the leadership he provides.”
He concluded by calling for greater unity among elected officials and encouraging councillors to prioritize development in key areas such as education, healthcare, and agriculture.
“We are committed to transparency. Any public official found misappropriating funds will be removed. We are also planning the renovation of local government secretariats to promote rural development, improve public services, and enhance security,” the governor concluded.
