Several residents have been reportedly trapped and injured after a two-storey building collapsed in the Oyingbo area of Lagos in the early hours of Monday.
According to a situation report released by the Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, the incident occurred around midnight at 54 Cole Street, near Cemetery Bus Stop.
Adeseye said a distress call was received around 12:20 a.m., prompting an immediate response from the Sari-Iganmu Fire Station team.
“It is an ongoing rescue involving an existing two-storey building which had reportedly been marked in distress before collapsing on the occupants,” she said.
So far, 15 victims — comprising seven men, four women, and four children — have been rescued with varying degrees of injuries. They have been taken to the Federal Medical Centre in Ebute-Metta and the General Hospital on Lagos Island for treatment.
Rescue operations were still ongoing as of press time, with officials from the Lagos State Emergency Management Authority (LASEMA), the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), and other first responders at the scene.
The cause of the collapse is yet to be determined, but government authorities have ordered a full investigation into the incident.
The tragedy comes just weeks after a similar two-storey building collapse was reported at Mangoro bus stop in Alimosho Local Government Area of the state, raising renewed concerns about the safety of distressed buildings across Lagos.
