Kaduna Workers Reject Wage Increase, NLC Threatens Strike

The Kaduna State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has rejected the state government’s recent salary adjustments, describing them as deceptive and inadequate.

In a statement signed by the NLC State Secretary, Comrade Gado Hussaini Titus, the union accused the government of failing to implement the ₦72,000 minimum wage as promised, delivering instead an “arbitrary and insulting increment” that falls short of the negotiated consequential adjustments.

“This action undermines workers’ welfare and represents a serious breach of public trust,” the statement read.

During a meeting on November 27, 2024, the NLC’s State Executive Council reaffirmed its commitment to the directive of the National Executive Council to initiate a strike if states fail to fully implement the new minimum wage by November 30. The union has set December 1 as the deadline for compliance, warning of industrial action if the government does not meet its demands.

The NLC urged the Kaduna State government to immediately implement the agreed adjustments and sign a memorandum of understanding to demonstrate its commitment to workers’ welfare.

“Anything less would constitute a betrayal of the hardworking workforce in the state,” the union stated.

The Kaduna State government has yet to respond, as tensions between labour unions and state authorities escalate over the national minimum wage policy. The situation raises the prospect of widespread industrial action in the coming days.

It’s unfortunate that the so-called leaders entrusted with the masses’ welfare abuse the opportunity but cater for themselves and their family members. May Allah judge them.
