A coalition of civil society organizations, known as the Situation Room on the War Against Banditry, has raised concerns over Zamfara State’s approach to addressing the ongoing banditry crisis.
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Friday, the group’s convener, Nwogu Ndubisi, highlighted the state’s inadequate response to the crisis, particularly in handling the notorious bandit leader, Turji.
Ndubisi claimed that the state’s insufficient efforts have contributed to rising tensions and worsening insecurity in Zamfara and neighboring regions.
He noted that the state continues to suffer from a severe banditry crisis, marked by frequent kidnappings, killings, and cattle rustling. Rural communities have been forced to pay protection fees to bandits in order to avoid attacks.
The coalition also criticized the state’s budget allocation, expressing concerns that resources may be diverted from vital public services.
Additionally, the group questioned Governor Dauda Lawal’s response to the military’s recent success in neutralizing bandit kingpin Kachalla Halilu. They urged the governor to actively support the military’s efforts to restore peace in the region.
The Situation Room on the War Against Banditry called for greater transparency and accountability in addressing the security challenges and appealed to the federal government, the Nigerian Armed Forces, and relevant agencies to sustain their efforts in bringing lasting peace to Zamfara and the wider North West region.
Ndubisi said, “The people of Zamfara deserve a leader who prioritizes their safety and security. The people of Zamfara deserve better. They deserve a leader who will confront the issues head-on.
“It is high time for leadership to prioritize the safety and security of the people.
“The Situation Room on the War Against Banditry urges the federal government, the Nigerian Armed Forces, and relevant agencies to continue their efforts to bring peace to Zamfara and the North West region.”
