The FBI and DEA have informed a U.S. District Court that they need an extra 90 days to provide reports regarding an alleged drug case involving President Bola Tinubu from the 1990s.
On Thursday, May 1, 2025, the agencies filed a Joint Status Report with the District Court for the District of Columbia, asking for an extension to process documents related to a case involving a Chicago-based drug ring.
The case involves Tinubu, who is said to have been part of the drug ring in the early 1990s. Legal advocate Aaron Greenspan, who filed the case, disagreed with the 90-day extension.
He proposed that the FBI and DEA produce the requested documents within 14 days.
Previously, the court ordered the agencies to search for and provide documents following Greenspan’s Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests from 2022 and 2023.
The original deadline to submit the documents was May 2, 2025.
The FOIA requested focus on a Chicago drug ring that allegedly involved Tinubu, along with individuals Lee Andrew Edwards, Mueez Abegboyega Akande, and Abiodun Agbele.
The FBI and DEA had initially responded by refusing to confirm or deny the existence of the documents, which the court rejected.
The agencies have now started looking for non-exempt records and expect to finish within 90 days.
However, Greenspan insisted they should release the documents already identified by next week and complete the remaining search within 14 days.
He also plans to seek reimbursement for his filing and postage fees, totaling $440.22.
The FBI and DEA proposed a status report to the court by July 31, 2025, but Greenspan has suggested a report be filed by May 31, 2025, instead.
