The Edo State Police Command has detained some officers accused of extorting N300,000 from a furniture maker in Benin City.
The officers, attached to the Oba Market Area Command, were exposed after a video went viral on social media showing a social media influencer narrating how the victim was allegedly harassed and forced to part with the money.
According to the influencer, the officers had initially demanded one million naira after subjecting the young man to an illegal search. When he could not raise the amount, they allegedly collected N300,000 from him.
In a statement on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Moses Joel Yamu, confirmed that the money has been recovered and returned to the victim.
“The officers involved have been promptly identified, the money has been fully recovered and returned to the victim, while the said officers have been detained and are to face disciplinary procedures in accordance with the extant regulations of the Nigeria Police Force,” the statement read.
Yamu added that stern administrative measures have also been taken against the Oba Market Area Command to reinforce professionalism, discipline, and respect for citizens’ rights in the discharge of police duties.
