Five Die, Two Injured in Ondo Truck Crash

Tragedy struck in Ondo State on Thursday when a speeding tipper truck rammed into a commercial vehicle, killing five people and injuring two others along the Oyin-Ilu Abo Road in Akure North Local Government Area.

The fatal crash, which occurred at about 9:10 a.m., involved a Nissan Sunny car ferrying market traders to the popular Ogbese Market and a DAF tipper truck.
Eyewitnesses said the victims were on their way to sell goods when the truck suddenly lost control and crushed the car.

Ondo State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Dr. Samuel Ibitoye, confirmed the incident, attributing the crash to excessive speeding.
“Seven persons were involved; five died on the spot and two sustained injuries. The deceased include one male adult, three female adults and one female child,”
Dr. Ibitoye said.

According to him, the remains of the victims have been deposited at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owo, while the injured are receiving treatment.
The FRSC boss expressed concern over the rising number of avoidable crashes along major routes in the state, noting that enforcement and safety sensitisation have been intensified, particularly along the Akure–Ogbese corridor.

“We are engaging tipper drivers and other motorists consistently. Mechanical faults and reckless driving contribute to these tragedies, and we will continue to ensure compliance,”
he added.

Ibitoye urged motorists to drive cautiously, especially during the ember months when traffic volume increases, warning that reckless road behaviour continues to cost innocent lives.
