Left-wing independent candidate Catherine Connolly has been elected as Ireland’s new president after a closely watched election marked by low voter turnout and criticism over the lack of options on the ballot.
Connolly, a 68-year-old barrister and member of parliament since 2016, defeated her only major challenger, Heather Humphreys of the centrist Fine Gael party.
The contest drew backlash after voters complained of having only two candidates, following the withdrawal of a third contender, Jim Gavin, who quit over a rent payment controversy.
Connolly, supported by Sinn Féin and other left-wing parties, campaigned on social justice, neutrality, and criticism of U.S. and EU policies, appealing strongly to younger voters. Her viral campaign video juggling a football and her appearances on popular podcasts helped boost her visibility.
Polling stations opened at 7:00 am (0600 GMT) and closed at 10:00 pm, with results announced late Saturday. She succeeds President Michael D. Higgins, who has held the position since 2011.
Analysts say voter frustration over the lack of a right-wing candidate and limited choice contributed to the low turnout — the smallest number of presidential contenders since 1990.
Meanwhile, conservative groups urged voters to spoil their ballots in protest, while others called for electoral reforms to allow broader representation in future polls.
