The Enugu State Police Command has arrested three men for allegedly vandalising high-voltage power cables in the Aninri Local Government Area of the state.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, disclosed this in a statement on Friday.

According to him, the suspects — identified as Chukwu Kelvin (25), Kenechukwu Ude (25), and Uche Nwankwo (28) — were intercepted by operatives of the Distress Response Squad (DRS) during a stop-and-search operation along the Enugu/Port Harcourt Expressway on October 20, 2025, at about 4:48 a.m.

Ndukwe said the suspects were caught transporting lengths of vandalised aluminium cables concealed under cassava leaves in a white minibus with registration number ENU 450 XK.

Items recovered from them include one large cable cutter, two pairs of rubber gloves, and a bag containing clothes.

He added that the suspects confessed to vandalising the cables from electric poles along Ukete Road in Oduma community and were transporting them to New Artisan Market, Enugu, for sale.

The state Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, condemned the act and reaffirmed the command’s commitment to “fishing out vandals and other criminals bent on destroying and denying citizens the enjoyment of essential social amenities.”

Giwa also urged residents to continue supporting the police with credible information to ensure the protection of public infrastructure.

Ndukwe noted that the suspects would be charged in court upon conclusion of investigations.
