At least four people have been killed and more than 30 injured in a Russian drone attack on Kharkiv, Ukrainian officials confirmed on Friday. The strike, which occurred late Thursday, caused multiple fires and extensive damage to residential and administrative buildings.
Ukraine’s emergency response agency reported that Russian drones targeted a district in Kharkiv, destroying homes and office spaces. Mayor Ihor Terekhov announced that a fourth fatality was discovered beneath the rubble as rescue operations continued.
There were conflicting reports on the number of casualties, with regional governor Oleh Synehubov citing 35 injured, while Mayor Terekhov reported 32. Meanwhile, six more people were wounded in separate drone strikes across the Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kyiv regions.
Dnipropetrovsk governor Sergiy Lysak stated that 13 enemy drones were intercepted but admitted that the attack caused “significant damage” in Dnipro and its suburbs.
In retaliation, Russia claimed to have intercepted 107 Ukrainian drones, primarily over the Kursk and Oryol regions. Additionally, a strike in Bryansk left one person dead and another injured, according to regional governor Aleksandr Bogomaz.
The escalation comes as U.S. President Donald Trump pushes for a ceasefire, reportedly engaging with Russian officials to negotiate an end to the conflict. While Washington recently suggested both Kyiv and Moscow had agreed to peace talks centered on energy infrastructure, the latest strikes have cast doubt on those efforts.
Ukrainian authorities have urged the U.S. to impose tougher sanctions on Russia, accusing Moscow of violating agreements made during previous discussions in Saudi Arabia.
