Four people have been confirmed dead and six others rescued after a three-storey building collapsed at No. 325, Bornu Street, Ebute Meta, Lagos State.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said it received a distress call at about 6:00 pm on Friday and immediately deployed a response team to the scene.
Speaking to newsmen, LASEMA’s Director of Operations, Olatunde Akinsanya, said casualty figures could still change as rescue operations progress.
“So far, six people have been rescued alive, while four have unfortunately lost their lives,” Akinsanya stated.
He credited the swift and coordinated response of multiple agencies, including the Lagos State Building Control Agency, the police, the Lagos State Fire Service, and the Federal Road Safety Corps, for helping to contain the situation and limit casualties.
“In spite of the magnitude of the collapse and the number of people in the building at the time, the swift intervention of the agencies prevented much loss of lives,” he said.
Akinsanya added that the emergency services, under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, continue to demonstrate effectiveness in handling such crises. He assured residents that Lagos has the equipment and expertise to manage emergencies of this scale.
“We urge Lagosians to remain calm and assured that the state government has state-of-the-art equipment to manage situations like this,” he said.
