American R\&B singer Chris Brown is expected to appear in a UK court on Friday after being arrested and charged over an alleged assault at a London nightclub in 2023, police said.
Brown, 36, known for hits like “Kiss, Kiss,” has a history of legal problems, including a felony conviction for assaulting then-girlfriend Rihanna in 2009.
He was arrested early Thursday at a hotel in Manchester, the Metropolitan Police said.
The singer, who has faced accusations including sexual assault and domestic violence, remains in custody and will appear in court in Manchester at 10:00 am on Friday, according to a police statement.
Brown was charged with “grievous bodily harm with intent” related to an assault at a venue in Hanover Square, London, on February 19, 2023.
Reports say Brown attacked music producer Abe Diaw with a bottle at Tape nightclub in London’s Mayfair district.
At the time, Brown was touring the UK. He reportedly arrived in Manchester by private jet on Wednesday afternoon.
He is scheduled to begin a world tour next month, with several UK dates in June and July.
Police detained Brown early Thursday at the Lowry Hotel in Manchester, according to media reports.
Brown is a two-time Grammy winner who rose to fame with his strong R\&B voice and rap. However, his career has been affected by allegations of domestic violence and abuse.
He was convicted of beating Rihanna before the 2009 Grammy Awards, which caused her to miss the event.
In 2012, Brown was involved in a fight at a New York nightclub with members of rapper Drake’s team. French basketball star Tony Parker was injured by a thrown glass bottle.
In 2014, Brown pleaded guilty to assaulting a fan in Washington.
Brown started singing in a church choir in Virginia before gaining fame. In 2016, he was arrested after a woman accused him of pointing a gun at her, and another woman accused him of battery in Las Vegas.
He was also accused of raping a woman in a Paris hotel but denied the claim and was not charged.
