Two Catholic nuns from the Immaculate Heart of Mary Congregation in Onitsha, Anambra State, have been released after spending six days in captivity.
According to NAN, the victims, Sister Nwankwo and Sister Grace Okoli, were kidnapped on the evening of January 7, 2025. They were freed unharmed and in good health.
The confirmation came through a statement issued by Sister Maria Ikeotuonye, the secretary general of the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, which was shared with journalists in Onitsha on Monday.
The statement expressed gratitude for the support and prayers of the public during the nuns’ ordeal. “We thank God and all of you for your prayers and support through these challenging days. May God forever be blessed through Mary, our mother,” the statement read.
When asked for further confirmation, the Anambra police command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, acknowledged receiving a press statement from the church but indicated that efforts were still underway to verify the details with the congregation. He noted that authorities were working to contact the sisters for a full report on their abduction and release.
