An airstrike by the Nigerian Air Force has mistakenly killed members of the Zamfara State Community Protection Guard (ZSCPG) and some residents of Tungar Kara in Maradun Local Government Area, Zamfara State.
According to Daily Post, the tragic incident occurred on Saturday following a raid by bandits in the area.
Reports indicate that at least 20 people lost their lives in the strike, which targeted the fleeing bandits but instead struck local vigilantes and residents mobilised to defend the community.
So far, 16 bodies have been recovered, with rescue efforts ongoing to ascertain the final death toll.
The airstrike, intended to neutralise the bandits, left a trail of devastation, raising concerns about the accuracy of military operations in the fight against insecurity in the state.
Residents of Tungar Kara are now demanding an investigation into the incident and seeking support for families affected by the error.
Military authorities have yet to comment on the airstrike, but the incident highlights the complexities and risks associated with tackling banditry in Zamfara State.
