Victor Boniface Retires from Nigeria’s National Team

Victor Boniface, a striker for Bayer Leverkusen, has officially ended his international career with the Super Eagles at just 24 years old.

As reported by Score Nigeria, He made the unexpected announcement on his Instagram page late Friday, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to represent Nigeria.

“It’s been a dream come true to wear the national colours. I’ve appreciated every part of the journey—both the challenges and the successes. Thank you all. I’m stepping away,” he wrote.

His decision came shortly after Nigeria’s 1-1 draw with Russia in a friendly match held in Moscow. Boniface featured in the starting lineup but was unable to get on the scoresheet. His substitute, Tolu Arokodare, later found the net in the 71st minute to level the match.

Boniface has recently been the subject of criticism over his lack of goals in national team appearances, and his performances have been under increasing scrutiny.

The forward is also facing uncertainty at club level, with questions surrounding his future at Bayer Leverkusen following the arrival of new head coach Erik ten Hag.
