The family of Janet Damiro, a 71-year-old Nigerian cleaner recently dismissed by the London School of Economics (LSE), has come forward to challenge the narrative surrounding her exit from the institution.
They described the situation as a misunderstanding that has been misrepresented by the media and online commentators.
In a statement shared with PUNCH Online on Friday, Damiro’s daughter, Aina, explained that her mother’s dismissal stemmed from an incident in February when she found a bracelet on the floor during the closing minutes of her morning shift.
According to Aina, Janet had intended to report the item but forgot and left it in her coin wallet, which remained untouched in her locker on campus.
When later asked about the bracelet, Janet reportedly cooperated fully, retrieved the item immediately, and explained the circumstances.
The family maintained that there was no attempt to conceal or steal the bracelet, and described the incident as an honest mistake.
They expressed disappointment over the university’s decision to terminate Janet’s employment, arguing it was harsh and lacked compassion—especially considering her long years of service and her age.
They added that the portrayal of Janet in the media was both unfair and damaging, particularly in how it reflected on older workers and women of colour in lower-paid positions.
The family also clarified that Janet’s interview with Metro UK was granted in good faith, aimed at shedding light on her experience—not to attract criticism or condemnation.
They urged both the public and media to reconsider how the issue is being framed, and called on institutions to better support vulnerable and long-serving employees.
As of the time of this report, the London School of Economics has not issued an official statement regarding the matter.
