The Russian forces have opened a new route as they advance on Kyiv, having been unsuccessful in their attempt to capture Chernihiv, a city in the north of Ukraine.

The PUNCH earlier reported that the Ukrainian troops pushed back the Russian forces from their advance on Kyiv by blowing up the city bridge.

In an Intelligence Update, the United Kingdom Defence Ministry tweeted on its official Twitter handle that the Russian armoured forces had opened an alternative route of advance towards the Ukrainian capital city of Kyiv.

“Russian armoured forces have opened a new route of advance towards Kyiv having failed to capture Chernihiv,” the tweet said.

The intelligence update also stated that there are sporadic clashes in the north of Kyiv as Russian forces advancing on Kyiv are more than 50km from the city centre.

“The bulk of Russian forces advancing on Kyiv remain more than 50km from the centre of the city.

There are reports of sporadic clashes in the northern suburbs of Kyiv, which we continue to monitor,” the update concluded.
