TUC Urges Diri to Prioritise Health, Education

By Charles Maduka

The Chairman of the Trade Union Congress in Bayelsa State, Julius Laye, has urged the state government under Governor Douye Diri to give greater attention to the health and education sectors despite its achievements in other areas.

Laye commended the administration for ongoing infrastructural projects, including road construction, the acquisition of two aircraft, gas turbines, and the nine-storey state secretariat building.

He also lauded the government for paying salaries promptly and settling gratuities owed to retired local government workers.

However, he expressed concern over the shortage of personnel in the health sector, stressing the need to employ more workers to replace those retiring. According to him, failure to do so could leave health facilities understaffed and ineffective.

Laye noted that while the Civil Service Commission and the Post Primary Schools Board had conducted recruitments, the Hospitals Management Board had not employed new staff for a long time. He appealed to the government to address this gap to ensure the smooth running of hospitals and clinics across the state.

He maintained that although the administration had made commendable progress, there was still a need to strengthen human capacity in the education and health sectors to achieve lasting development in Bayelsa State.
