A fatal accident occurred on Friday morning at Opa Junction near Olokuta Village, along Ondo Road in Akure, as a speeding truck crushed a well-known furniture trader, popularly known as “Daddy Ese,” to death.
Eyewitnesses reported that the truck, traveling at high speed, rammed into a commercial motorcycle (okada) carrying the victim. While the trader tragically lost his life, the motorcycle rider miraculously escaped without injuries.
Instead of stopping to assist, the truck driver attempted to flee the scene. However, quick action by other road users and military personnel led to his arrest after a dramatic chase.
The devastating incident left the victim’s wife in anguish, as she was seen weeping uncontrollably at the scene.
Reacting to the tragedy, the Chairman of the Okada Riders Association at Adebowale Junction, Akure, Mr. Monday Desmond, called on the government to expand the road, citing its narrowness as a major factor contributing to frequent accidents.
Similarly, the Ondo State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Dr. Samuel Ibitoye, urged motorists to drive cautiously, especially on narrow roads, warning that anyone caught violating traffic regulations would face severe legal consequences.
This incident comes as the Federal Government recently approved and commenced the dualization of the Akure-Ondo-Ore highway to curb road crashes and prevent further loss of lives.
