The Federal Government has established a new negotiation committee to prevent an impending strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities. The committee, led by former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mahmud Yayale Ahmed, was inaugurated by the Minister of Education, Dr. Olatunji Alausa, in Abuja.
Dr. Alausa explained that the committee would coordinate discussions with academic and non-academic unions across universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education. He said the aim is to harmonize all negotiations under one structure that promotes fairness and long-term peace in the education sector.
The decision came after ASUU gave the Federal Government a two-week strike notice, accusing it of failing to meet previous agreements. The new committee is expected to engage with all unions to reach a lasting resolution before the deadline.
The Minister stated that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has given full support to the process, directing that all negotiations be concluded quickly and fairly. He also appealed to unions to cooperate with the committee in the interest of students and the education system.
Chairman of the committee, Mahmud Yayale Ahmed, promised that the team would work with openness and integrity to restore trust and ensure peace in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.
