A 27-year-old trader named Bitrus Dalo was sentenced to six months in prison by a Jos Magistrates’ Court for assaulting his sister-in-law.
Judge Shawomi Bokkos delivered a summary judgment after Mr. Dalo pleaded guilty.
However, the judge provided an alternative for the convict to pay a fine of N30,000 along with compensation of N35,000 to the complainant.
Judge Bokkos emphasized that the sentence aimed to deter potential offenders from similar acts.
Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Inspector Ibrahim Gokwat told the court that the case was reported on March 14, at the “B” Police station Jos by the complainant, Mary Simon.
The prosecutor said the convict hit the complainant on the head and threatened to kill her.
The complainant sustained injuries as a result of the assault and was taken to a hospital for treatment.
The offence, according to him, is punishable under the Plateau State Penal Code Law.
