Three persons have been confirmed dead, while several others sustained varying degrees of injury, following an early-morning attack on Gwon-Rim village in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State by suspected Fulani militia.
The assault, which took place on Wednesday, reportedly involved over 50 heavily armed assailants who stormed the community, firing sporadically and forcing residents to flee into nearby bushes for safety. Witnesses said the attackers set houses and vehicles ablaze, looted shops and food barns, and made away with livestock.
Chairman of Riyom LGA, Hon. Sati Bature Shuwa, who visited the scene for an on-the-spot assessment, condemned the incident, describing it as “uncalled for, unprovoked, and unacceptable.” He assured the villagers that security operatives have been directed to track down the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
Shuwa also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property in the area. He later visited the hospital where the injured victims are receiving treatment.
The latest attack adds to a series of violent incidents that have plagued Plateau communities in recent months, raising renewed concerns over insecurity in the state.
