The Federal Government on Sunday held a special thanksgiving service at the National Ecumenical Centre in Abuja as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary. The service was organised to offer prayers and express gratitude for the nation.
The event attracted top government officials and security chiefs. Among those present were the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, who attended with their spouses.
Other dignitaries included Finance Minister and Coordinating Minister of the Economy Wale Edun, former Plateau State Governor Simon Lalong, and the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, who led the service chiefs in attendance. Also present were the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice-Admiral Emmanuel Ogala, Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, Comptroller-General of the Nigerian Immigration Service Kemi Nandap, and Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service Sylvester Nwakuche.
The thanksgiving service took place a few days after the government unveiled the official theme and programme for the 2025 Independence celebrations. This year’s anniversary is themed “Nigeria @ 65: All Hands on Deck for a Greater Nation.”
Activities lined up for the celebration include a Juma’at prayer, an inter-denominational church service, and a world press conference. President Bola Tinubu and former Heads of State Yakubu Gowon, Olusegun Obasanjo, and Goodluck Jonathan are also expected at a national discourse organised by the Island Club, Lagos, on October 2, 2025, to mark the anniversary.
The event in Abuja was part of the government’s efforts to involve key stakeholders and seek divine guidance as the country marks 65 years of independence.
