Members of the House of Representatives from the Third Republic are appealing to President Bola Tinubu for assistance in receiving unpaid salaries and allowances from their time in office.
The request comes from John Fasogbon, who served as the representative for Ife Central Constituency, and is now the spokesperson for the group.
Fasogbon, who noted that Tinubu was a fellow lawmaker in the 1992-1993 period, explained that many of the former lawmakers are living in dire conditions due to the lack of payments.
He pointed out that over 270 of the 598 former lawmakers have passed away without receiving their entitled benefits.
Those who remain alive are struggling financially despite being lawfully elected but removed without compensation.
Fasogbon appealed directly to President Tinubu, urging him to use his influence to ensure the payment of the outstanding salaries and allowances from their time in the National Assembly.
He stressed that these lawmakers played an important role in the country’s democracy, which was solidified during the Third Republic under the leadership of MKO Abiola.
In his statement, Fasogbon reminded the president that MKO Abiola, a key figure in Nigeria’s democratic process, was honoured posthumously by former President Muhammadu Buhari, and suggested that Tinubu follow suit by aiding the surviving Third Republic lawmakers.
While making the request, Fasogbon also acknowledged Tinubu’s accomplishments in his first two years as president and congratulated him on the anniversary.
