Residents of Yargeda community in Bakura Local Government Area of Zamfara State have reportedly killed a suspected bandit following an attack on the community that led to the abduction of three residents.
According to Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication focused on the Lake Chad region, armed bandits invaded the community on Friday night, attacking residents before escaping with their captives.
The report said the suspected bandit was apprehended while he and other members of the gang were escorting the abducted victims through a forest area around Rini village, where local vigilantes and community members intercepted them.
While other members of the group reportedly managed to flee, one suspect was captured by residents. He was subsequently tied up and lynched, with his body reportedly hung on a water tank structure within the community.
The incident comes amid a surge in bandit attacks across Zamfara State and other parts of northern Nigeria, as communities increasingly resort to self-help measures amid concerns over delayed security response.
In recent weeks, the state has recorded several violent incidents linked to banditry. On December 13, travellers along the Gurusu–Gwashi road in Bukkuyum Local Government Area were reportedly injured after an improvised explosive device (IED), allegedly planted by bandits, detonated.
Similarly, in October, gunmen attacked Zamfarawa village in the Zugu district of Bukkuyum LGA, abducting at least 30 residents.
Residents and civil society groups have continued to call for stronger security presence and improved intelligence-led operations to curb the persistent wave of violence and prevent further loss of lives in affected communities.
