The Supreme Court has denied reports suggesting that one of its Justices travelled to Benin City, Edo State, because of a political case currently before the court.
The court explained that the Justice made the trip on Thursday, June 12, 2025, with proper approval from the Chief Justice of Nigeria, and that the purpose was solely to attend a burial ceremony.
The funeral was for the late mother of Hannibal Uwaifo, a senior lawyer and former African Bar Association President.
According to the court, the Justice only attended the service at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church and briefly stopped at a service of songs before returning to his hotel.
He did not attend any political gathering or meet anyone linked to any case.
A photo shared online, which has been used to support the claim, reportedly only shows the Justice returning alone to his hotel room.
The Supreme Court expressed concern over what it described as a growing trend of false information being circulated to mislead the public and damage the reputation of judicial officers.
It warned that such actions harm the image of the judiciary and could weaken public trust in the system.
The apex court urged anyone seeking information about its activities to reach out through official channels rather than rely on unverified claims being spread online.
It restated its dedication to justice and the rule of law, adding that distractions will not affect its work.
