The Bayelsa State Government has declared a three-day state mourning following the sudden death of the Deputy Governor, Lawrence Oborawharievwo Ewhrudjakpo, who passed away on Thursday, December 11, at the age of 60.
In an official statement issued on Friday, December 12, 2025, and signed by the Commissioner for Information, Orientation and Strategy, Hon. (Mrs.) Ebiuwou Koku-Obiyai, the government described his death as “a painful and profound tragedy” for the state and the entire nation.
According to the statement, Ewhrudjakpo was active and performing his routine duties earlier in the day before he collapsed while heading to a scheduled meeting within his office. He was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Yenagoa, where doctors later confirmed him dead.
Governor Douye Diri, mourning the loss, said the Deputy Governor’s passing was “not just painful, but a monumental loss” to Bayelsa State. He praised Ewhrudjakpo’s long and distinguished career in public service, which included serving as Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Senator representing Bayelsa West, and, since 2020, Deputy Governor of the state.
Governor Diri extended condolences to the widow, Mrs. Beatrice Ewhrudjakpo, the children, the Ewhrudjakpo family, the Ofoni Federated Community, and all Bayelsans, including former Governor Senator Henry Seriake Dickson.
As part of the mourning period, which begins Friday, December 12, all flags across the state are to be flown at half-mast. The Governor also called for prayers for God’s comfort for the family and the people of Bayelsa State.
He expressed hope that the late Deputy Governor’s soul would “find rest in the bosom of the Lord.”
