Super Eagles’ Coach faces fans’ fury, insults over misfiring Super Eagles

Fans have flooded the Instagram page of Super Eagles head coach Finidi George with insults and demands for his dismissal after Nigeria’s unexpected 2-1 defeat to Benin Republic in their fourth Group C match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers on Monday.

This loss has significantly jeopardized Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, to be hosted jointly by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. With only three points from their qualifiers, Nigeria is in a precarious fifth place in their group, trailing Zimbabwe, who still have a game in hand.

Nigerian football fans have expressed their frustration with the Super Eagles’ performance by leaving harsh and critical comments on the former Enyimba coach’s Instagram posts. Many have called for the Nigeria Football Federation to terminate his contract immediately.

One Instagram user, @oghenrej, commented, “You better resign peacefully to avoid any issues. You’re too incompetent, just telling you my mind.”

Another user, @horlayemi_003, wrote, “You don’t know anything. Leave the job.”

A particularly harsh comment from @hemdmajorderimaomeaku read, “Tunibu or Finidi, which one do they call you? You don’t even look like a coach. How did you get here? Who taught you how to coach?”

Despite the backlash, Finidi George and his team have over 200 days to prepare for the next round of qualifiers, scheduled for March 2025.

The Super Eagles face a tough challenge, needing to win their remaining six games to secure a spot in the expanded 48-team World Cup.
