Sport is an integral part of human development,But little or no attention is being given to it.
Sedara Oluwadara interviews a veteran Sport administrator,Mr Adeyanju Joshua,Mr Adeyanju is a retired Physical and Health Education Teacher with vast experience in sport administration. He Speaks on the Myriad of challenges facing sport development especially at the Grassroot.
Can we meet you?
I am Adeyanju oluwafemi Joshua,
a retired physical education teacher
Why did you choose sport as career?
My interest in sports was as a result of the inspirations
I got from two PHE teachers of mine by name Mr Dixon Brown and Hon Chief Bisi Egbeyemi the current deputy governor of Ekiti state.Their mode of dressing in white with whistle around their neck and physical appearances all the time.
What is your memorable moment as a Physical and Health Education Teacher?
My memorable days are so numerous to be mentioned during this short interview . One being a sports man has given me a unique personality that makes me to look physically fit and younger than my age. Those responses from all my former students give me joy and satisfaction all the time.
Have you ever participated in any state or National sporting program?
No as we were not given any encouragement to that effect during our days.Only people at Akure and its environ were given such opportunity and the financial aspect also contributed to our being localized and restricted to our local environment.
As an Astute Sport Administrator,How can grassroot sport attracts attention?
This can be done if the government of the day have interest in developing sports by providing sports facilities and equipment to all our schools,by employing of qualified and competent PHE teachers in our schools and some philanthropists in our environment should also supply sporting materials to our schools. Local stadium and gymnasium should also be built in all our local government headquarters.
How can School sport be revived?
The above points can also help to revive sports in our schools. In addition to this local state and national competition should be brought back to our schools. Coaches in various sports should be posted to our schools and the subject physical education should be treated as one of the core subjects in our schools.Government should supply sporting materials to our schools in in order to make the teaching not to be too abstract to the students.

Has any of your former student chosen sport as career?
They are just too many to be mentioned here. During the last AIONIAN sports competition that was held in MMGS Iju Odo,most of the officials invited to officiate were my former students who are now graduates in physical education. As I am talking to you a former student of mine by name Segun Obajowa aka Okoro is playing in Europe Femi Adedugba aka Kaita is having a football club in Okitipupa.I must not forget your humble self Mr Sedara Oluwadara who is one of the reputable and registered coaches in Nigeria.
What is your most challenging moment as a sport administrator?
Two of the most challenging moments I had as an administrator in sports that I will never forget are
– I took my students from MMGS Iju Odo to Okitipupa for a football match between another secondary school from irele and the referees called me and demanded money so that they could win the match for me. I felt so bad and embarrassed because those concerned were highly placed and respected in our local stadium and I don’t want to offend them.
– I took my team to Gbogan ode omu during AIONIAN sports competition and not quite 3 minutes into the match one of my best players had a fractured bone and I was so demoralized considering the distance we covered and the pain of the inocent boy. Eventually we lost the match. Those two instances can not be forgotten by me in life.
what is your advice for young sport administrators?
My candid advice will be in line with the one given to us during a seminar in which Segun Odegbami was the guest speaker. He said sports with academics will make a better future. That he is still relevant even when he has stopped playing football because of his educational background. Those team mates without education you don’t hear anything about them again. He mentioned Owolabi and Adokie that are still relevant because of their education. So I want say that we all know that the sports age and period are very limited and how you will survive and manage your resources depends on the knowledge you have so that you don’t go bankrupt so easily.
