Renowned activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has stirred a fresh wave of controversy on social media following his claims that Nigeria was spending a staggering £3,000 (approximately N6 million) per night on the medical treatment of the late President Muhammadu Buhari in the United Kingdom.
Sowore made the revelation via a post on his official Facebook page shortly after news broke of Buhari’s death on Saturday.
According to him, the Nigerian government continued to shoulder the heavy financial burden of Buhari’s prolonged medical care in London up until his demise.
He wrote:
“Even in death, the truth must be told. Nigeria was still incurring a cost of £3,000 per night for General Muhammadu Buhari’s treatment in London until his death today. What a colossal waste of resources!”
Sowore’s statement has since sparked mixed reactions online, with many Nigerians questioning the secrecy surrounding the former president’s health and the financial implications of his foreign medical trips.
Buhari’s frequent medical visits to the UK during his tenure as president had long drawn criticism from citizens and stakeholders, who decried the lack of investment in Nigeria’s healthcare system.
While official statements from the presidency have not addressed Sowore’s claims, the post has rekindled national conversations on transparency, governance, and the state of public health infrastructure in the country.
