Human Rights Lawyer and Publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore led a peaceful protest in Akure, Ondo State capital on Thursday demanding the reinstatement and protection for three suspended officers of the Ondo State Security Network Agency, codenamed Amotekun.
The protesters marched through major streets carrying placards and chanting solidarity songs as they called for an end to alleged victimisation of the officers. They accused the agency’s leadership of intimidating personnel who demanded their appointment letters and proper documentation.
Addressing the rally, Sowore condemned what he described as abuse of power within the Amotekun corps, warning that such tendencies undermine efforts to build credible state policing structures.
“Those we expect to evolve into a model state police have already started abusing authority. This must stop,” Sowore declared.
The protesters insisted on the immediate lifting of the suspension placed on Akinsipe Victor Temitope, Ekujumi Julius, and Abu Taiwo, who reportedly went into hiding after allegedly being declared wanted.
The protest follows reports that armed men allegedly linked to Amotekun stormed the residence of one of the officers, Abu Taiwo, prompting him to flee into the night. His whereabouts remain unknown.
His wife earlier staged a solo protest at the Governor’s Office, demanding answers and protection for her husband.
Human rights lawyer, Tope Temokun, representing the affected officers, accused the corps leadership of harassment and targeting personnel who questioned their working conditions.
“Their only ‘offence’ was asking for their welfare and official appointment letters,” Temokun said in a statement.
“Power must not be used as a tool for intimidation. We call on the governor to intervene immediately.”
He urged Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to ensure the safety of the officers and investigate the allegations against the Amotekun Commander, Akogun Adetunji Adeleye.
The protesters demanded full documentation of Amotekun personnel and issuance of proper appointment letters, stressing the need for transparency in the operation of the security outfit.
They vowed to continue peaceful demonstrations until justice is served and the officers receive assurances of safety.
