The Federal Government of Nigeria has secured the release of six Nigerian women who were wrongfully detained in Cape Verde over baseless human trafficking allegations.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement on Wednesday, confirmed that the women had been freed and had already returned from Cape Verde. The release followed diplomatic efforts led by Nigeria’s Mission in Guinea Bissau, which engaged directly with Cape Verdean authorities to resolve the issue.
According to the Ministry, the women had traveled to Cape Verde for a vacation but were unexpectedly arrested on false trafficking claims, which were later found to be unsubstantiated.
Spokesperson for the Ministry, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, expressed relief over the positive outcome and reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to defending the rights and dignity of its citizens abroad.
Part of the statement read: “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is pleased to announce that the six Nigerian women previously detained in Cape Verde have all regained their freedom and departed the country. Our Mission in Guinea Bissau worked with Cape Verdean authorities to ensure their release. The women had traveled for leisure but were unfortunately arrested on unfounded trafficking accusations, which have now been cleared.”
The Ministry assured that it will continue to provide consular support and protection to Nigerians in distress overseas.
