Police Resume Tinted-Glass Permit, Online Application Now Required

The Nigeria Police Force has restarted the process of issuing tinted-glass permits to car owners across the country.

This move comes after several complaints from Nigerians who have been stopped and questioned by officers over tinted windows, especially after the previous suspension of the permit.

The permit system had earlier been halted following a rise in criminal acts such as “one-chance” robberies in Abuja and other cities, where tinted vehicles were used to hide identities and movements.

This led to confusion on the roads, with many drivers clashing with police officers demanding a permit that was no longer being issued.

The decision to bring back the permit was confirmed on Wednesday by the police spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi.

He explained that the process will now be handled online to avoid unnecessary contact with police officers.

The application can be done through a digital platform at https://www.possap.gov.ng, where users will need to provide both their National Identification Number (NIN) and Tax Identification Number (TIN), along with biometric data.

The police noted that this change aims to create a clear and easy way for people with genuine reasons, such as health or security needs, to use tinted glass legally.

It also hopes to stop criminals who have taken advantage of such vehicles to carry out kidnapping, robbery, and fraud.

The new system will issue digital permits that carry QR codes and are expected to be ready within 72 hours.

Motorists have until May 31, 2025, to comply. From that date, officers will begin checking for valid permits during their patrols.

A 30-day grace period has been provided starting May 1, 2025. During this time, no enforcement will take place.

However, once the period ends, any driver caught without a permit may face legal action.

The police also warned that any officers found harassing or demanding bribes from drivers during this enforcement will be punished.

The force promised to remain firm on discipline and wants to build public trust while ensuring safety on the roads.
