Shehu Sani weighs-in on factors behind Speaker Obasa’s impeachment

The Lagos State House of Assembly witnessed a major shake-up on Monday, January 13, as lawmakers removed Mudashiru Obasa from his position as Speaker. In a swift transition, Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda was appointed to take over the role.

According to Politics Nigeria, in response to the development, former Senator Shehu Sani, who represented Kaduna Central, shared his perspective on why such incidents occur in Nigeria’s legislative bodies.

Reflecting on his political experience since 1999, Sani outlined key factors that often lead to the impeachment of a Speaker.

He pointed out that suspicion of a Speaker planning an impeachment against others could provoke such action.

Sani also observed that tensions often arise when a Speaker asserts independence and resists directives from the governor.

Additionally, a Speaker may face backlash if lawmakers feel neglected or unsupported, especially if their welfare is overlooked.

Delays in advancing the governor’s legislative priorities or allegations of collaborating with perceived adversaries of the governor were also noted as potential triggers for impeachment.

Sani’s remarks provide insight into the power struggles and political maneuvering that frequently shape leadership dynamics in Nigerian legislative chambers.
